Cultural Awareness Week

Date: 11th Nov 2020 @ 9:50am

Last week was Cultural Awareness Week at school so we had great fun in Reception class learning about different countries and their cultures. Our first stop on the map was France. We read a book together about a little boy who told us all about his life in France. Some children were able to share their own experiences of visiting France which was very interesting! We learnt how to say 'bonjour' and we learnt the french nursery rhyme 'Frère Jacques'.

Our next stop was Zambia. We looked at lots of photos of what life was like in Zambia - we looked at houses, a school, shops and animals and talked about the differences between their culture and ours. The children asked some fantastic questions and made some very interesting observations. We looked at some traditional Zambian clothing which was very colourful and had lots of different patterns on. In Zambia, the material for clothes has been block printed to make a repeating pattern. We used this idea to create our own patterns. Using the colours of the Zambian flag we painted Zambian animals using rollers and stamps. The children made some fantastic prints! Later in the week, we learned about the most common language in Zambia which is Bemba. We learnt how to greet people in Zambia by saying 'mulishani' which means 'how are you?' and 'bwino' which means 'good'. We also learnt a Bemba song!

Our final stop of the week was to India. We read some traditional Indian stories together and then looked at a book all about life in India. The children were able to compare Indian culture to our culture here in England and made some great observations. The most exciting part of the day was trying some Indian food! Everyone was very good at trying the new food and enjoyed eating poppadoms and chipatis. Lots of children said that the chipati tasted like a wrap.

We really enjoyed learning about different cultures and it was a great way to spend our first week back after the half term holiday!
