Evolution in the Botanical Gardens with Y6

Date: 27th Mar 2023 @ 9:12am

We had a very informative afternoon in the Botanical Gardens, learning about the evolution of plants. We discovered that the first land plants evolved from water around 500 million years ago, in the form of moss. It has no roots or seeds, and is spread by the wind spreading its spores. We then went on to learn that stems first evolved 420 million years ago, and went to the tropical greenhouse to study the banana tree. Next we looked at plants with flowers, which have been on earth for a mere 140 million years. We looked closely with our magnifying glasses, and sketched the fascinating plants. Having dodged a shower whilst inside, we ventured out into the beautiful Spring sunshine to see an amasing fossil of moss. What an interesting afternoon!
