Fabulous fires and fun in the forest with year five!

We had an amazing day today in Ecclesall Woods with the wonderful Sarah. Firstly, we camouflaged ourselves with face paints (we all need a bath tonight!) and had a go at hiding from potential predators. Then we made our own functioning compasses from a magnet, a needle, and a bowl of water... they actually worked! We moved on from here to light our own fires the old fashioned way, using  a steel firestarter which created a spark... eventually... to light a piece of cotton wool, and this lit the kindling wood.... eventually! It was hard work but very rewarding in the end! After lunch we built dens which Sarah put to the test by throwing water over them - they were surprisingly water-tight! Finally, Sarah expertly built a fire, we sharpened a stick, and toasted marshmallows over it.... delicious! What a wonderful day!
