Our Book Study Week has begun!

Date: 16th Oct 2018 @ 4:01pm

The book we are looking at in Book Study Week is Emma Jane's Aeroplane by Katie Haworth. In the book, Emma Jane flies around the world looking at landmarks in London, Paris, Venice, New York, Beijing and Sydney. Amazingly, this takes only one night - a real feat when Emma Jane's plane seems to date from about 1920. The children loved learning about the history of flight mainly because of the video of people trying to make a manned flight. 'Don't try this at home' was the first comment when they had got over their giggles.

We are making models and drawings of the landmarks that Emma Jane visits. So far our class has partly made Big Bens from junk and Eiffel Towers of Artstraws. Mrs Woodward and Mrs Gage are very impressed with the children's beautiful drawings of the landmarks. The children are looking as carefully as real artists at these buildings.

Mrs Gage has begun to make books with the children in the way that her mum learnt to make them in the 1950s. Paper shortages meant that teachers often made exercise books for their classes and it was something taught in teacher training. We have made our own books -with covers - and sewn together. These 21st century children are loving this old technique and they couldn't wait to start using their very own, handmade book.
