Rock investigation in Y3

We had a fascinating afternoon in Y3 carrying out a science investigation on various types of rocks. Each group had five different rocks, and we tested their hardness (can we squeeze it?), durability (can we sand it?), density (how quickly does it sink?) and permeability (does it absorb water drops?). We also had a go at guessing what type of rock family they come from (sedimentary, igneous or metamorphic). This links brilliantly with our volcano investigation as well as our class book. We each had our own rock but worked in teams, and had to think about each other's findings. Overall, we learnt that rocks have different properties.
